BUILDING PROJECT.

£SOO MORE REQUIRED. WORKS OF PRESBYTERIAN CHARGE. If the programme planned by the Board of Managers is to be carried out, £SOO more than the. estimated income will have to be .raised by the congregation of the. Ashburton Presbyterian Charge in the coming year, explained the Treasurer (Mr D. 11, Moore) at the annual congregational meeting last evening. The estimated income from collections, donations, envelopes and assistance from Bible Classes, Sunday Schools and women’s organisations would be about £2300, said Mr Moore, while the required amount was £2SOO. The balance would have to be made up from collections or by special efforts. In thanking the congregation and his fellow workers for their valuable assistance the Rev. J. S. Murray said that the charge was facing new responsibilities, and had accepted a challenge as far. as the building project was concerned, but he was confident the, project would be successful. The Board of Managers had considered all the alternatives open to them before making a decision. It therefore remained for the congregation to face the new responsibility Avith prudence, courage and faith. Satisfaction at the schetne decided upon at the previous annual meeting, regarding the amalgamation of the Allenton, Ashburton East and Wakanui charges with St. Andrew’s was expressed by representatives of the charges. The speakers, Messrs C. Crawford (Wakanui), A. P. Calder (Ashburton East), and W. Buchan (Allenton) expressed gi’atitude at the work done by the Rev. D. M. Steedman in the three charges. Assurance of the high esteem in which Mr Steedman was held was stressed. In reply Mr Steedman spoke of his happy association with the congregations and his satisfaction at the friendliness and help of the congregations. A suggestion that the position of the choir be re-arranged so that the volume. of the singing was directed more upon the congregation was made by several members of the congregation. The matter will be considered by the Board of Managers.
