ALLENTON SCHOOL.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. X. v-. • fvv- K The Allenton School Committee met last evening, when Mr B. Evans presided. Others present were'Messrs C. G. Jessop, H. Jamison, W. J. T. Lochhead and J. J. Childs. The headmaster (Mr J. Southward) reported that the roll for the week ended last Friday was 219 (girls 96, boys 123). The sum of £1 9s 4d had been collected for penny poppy emblems for Anzac Day. An address on India was given by Major I. Argyle, an ex-pupil of the school, during the month. A prize of 10s for the best essay on India was donated by him. Mr Southward was congratulated on his initiative in obtaining Major Argyle to speak, as the address had proved of great value to the pupils. In view of the shortage of storage room, it was depided to request the Education Board to consider building a large cupboard at the school for the storage of sports gear and hand-work materials. For the visiting committee, .Mr Evans reported that the alterations to the heating system were of great benefit. On the recommendation of the visiting committee it was decided to obtain a dozen ipse bushes from the Board. It was decided to write to the Borough Council congratulating it on the interest taken in the establishing of a country library service in Ashburton. Messrs H. Vartha and Jamison were appointed a visiting committee for next month. As the chairman (Mr C. H. F. Maynard) had been appointed to the Borough Council, it was decided to alter the night for the meeting to the first Wednesday in the month, to avoid clashing with the meeting of the Council,
