THE WEATHER.

PLEASANT AND SUNNY. After a frost of 11.4 degrees the sun shone pleasantly from a clear sky at Ashburton to-day. 1 There was a keen southerly breeze. The maximum and minimum temperatures yesterday were 49.5 and 27.2 degrees, compared with 52.1 and 36.8 on Wednesday. The barometer to-day registered 29.55 inches, against 29. Cl yesterday.

THE MONTH AT ASHBURTON. t There were more wet, bleak and dull cold days at Ashburton last month than there were fine sunny ones. Rain fell on 17 occasions, and a period of 10 days without sunshine was experienced. The last three weekends were wet and cold. The rainfall for the month totalled 5.87 inches, the heaviest falls being of 1.58 inches on the 13th and 1.56 on the 19th. For the previous May the fall was 2.52 inches, with 1 inch in 1943 and 5.18 in 1942. Of 21 frosts recorded, the heaviest was 13.1 degrees on the Ist, with one of 12.5 last Monday, which was an extremely cold, dull day. The highest maximum temperature was 66.5 degrees on the 2nd, and the lowest minimum temperature was 28.1 on the 7th.

The barometer has fluctuated between 29.05 and 30.02 inches.

TO-DAY’S FORECAST. (P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Government Meteorologist, at noon to-day, issued the following statement regarding the weather: General situation: An anti-cyclone is extending on to the North Tasman and a weak trough is crossing the South Island. The forecast for the east coast of the South Island from Blenheim to Oamaru to 5 p.m. to-morrow is as follows:—Moderate variable winds. Weather fair to fine and cold, with frosts tonight. Further outlook: Fair.
