WASTE DEPOT CLOSES.

SERVICE FOR THREE YEARS £llsO FOR PATRIOTIC FUNDS No more waste paper will be accepted at the Ashburton Reclamation Depot, which closed yesterday after operating since July 3, 1942. This is a result of the decision of the National Council of Reclamation to hand back the collection of waste paper to the Salvation Army in the four main centres. There are about 16 hales at the depot awaiting dispatch.

The position regarding the supply of waste rubber is not certain. A letter from the Canterbury Reclamation Roard received by the Town Clerk (Mr R. C, Major), states that collections will be continued by the National Council till Rubber Reclaim have received their promised quota of 2000 tons. „

The demand for rubber will, of course, continue, as crude rubber will be scarce for some time; and reclaimed rubber will continue to be an essential commodity.

Since the depot opened, sterling voluntary service has been given by Messrs J. W. Tinker, A. E. Savill, R. Kemp, H. Clayton and several others. For the first few months the depot was open for only half a day for five days a week, but, as the work became more pressing, with an abundance of paper, it became necessary to observe longer hours and the depot was opened for seven hours daily. This has been the case for the last two years. Service By The Staff.

Mr W. Horrell was in charge when the depot opened, but shortly after he obtained another position. He was succeeded by Mr Tinker, who has worked for seven hours a day, with few exceptions for three years. When necessary he has been relieved by Mr Saville who normally was in attendance two days a week. One day a week was devoted to the depot by Mr Clayton, and 2h days by Mr Kemp. The depot has raised about £llsO for patriotic funds, including some credits still to be received. Up to March, 1943, it had been the means of raising £372. During the following year £292 7s 7d was credited to the funds through the depot; and for the year just ended the credit was £378 2s sd, of which £252 17s Id was for paper and £125 ss, 4d for rubber. For the quarter ended March 31 last the credits from rubber alone totalled £25 7s 5d nearly 61 tons being handled.
