the wakanui meeting. At the May meeting the Wakanui Women’s Institute celebrated its 12th birthday. A small presentation was made to Mrs Kirkland, who is shortly leaving the district. Many visitors from surrounding institutes were welcomed by the president (Mrs Dick). Items were given as follow: —Songs, Mrs L. Butterick; Scotch reading, Mrs Hendrie; elocutionary items, Janet Crawford and Margaret Leadley. Two competitions, which caused much amusement, were won by Mrs Fitzgerald and the Fairton Institute. Margaret Butterick and Ruth Hendrie, for the Junior Red Cross, handed over a beautifully finished patchwork quilt to be sent to the link in England. The candles on the cake were lit by Mrs T. S. Taylor and were blown out by Mrs G. Leadley, while Mrs Hendrie (secretary) cut the cake. Greetings were extended by delegates from Hampstead, Fairton, Ashburton, Alienton and the Executive. A sales table, in charge of Mesdames Taylor and C. Brand, "did good business and as a result a fine donation was made toward the appeal for food for Britain. Mrs Brand thanked those responsible for the arranging of the programme for the afternoon. Competitions resulted: Large bloom, Mrs Gray 1, Mrs Kirkland 2, Mrs Frampton 3; small bloom, Mrs Gray 1, Mrs Kirkland 2, Mrs J. Moore 3; three chrysanthemums, Mrs Frampton 3, Mrs Kirkland 2, Mrs Gray 3; seasonal bowl, Mrs Frampton 1, Mrs H. Watson 2, Mrs Dick 3. GOOD ATTENDANCE AT LAURISTON. The president, Mrs C. A. Ffye, presided over a large attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Lauriston Branch of the Women’s Institute. The motto was: “And now with purpose full and clear we turn to meet another year.” Three new members, Misses A. Irwin and J. and G. Clemens, were welcomed by the president. The following district servicemen serving overseas, wrote acknowledging Institute parcels: Trooper G. Gimson, Gunner K. Smith, Signalman W. Smith and Driver D. L. Fyfe. The Pendarves - Chertsey Institute wrote inviting the Lauriston Institute to attend its birthday party. It was decided to send a parcel and letter of cheer to W.O. H. Sutton who is at present in a R.N.Z.A.F. Hospital at Rotorua.
The hostesses were Mesdames J Mclntosh and D. Lemon.
