LOOKING BACK.
FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” May 31, 1895). Hinds Library Funds —A concert in aid of funds for the Hinds public library was held on Friday evening. The schoolroom was tastefully decorated with evergreens. Nearly all performers were from Ashburton. The songs given by Mesdames Claridge and Gates, by Misses Gates, Wilson, and Orr and Messrs Brooke, Miller, Gates and Broad were much appreciated. After the concert the hail was cleared and dancing was kept up till close on daylight. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” May 31, 1920). Shortage of Trucks—-Produce stores in Ashburton and the County are at present filled to overflowing. The problem of providing storage accommodation has been made acute by the shortage of railway trucks. The stores at Lyttelton port are similarly congested. The immediate problem is to find storage for the heavy crops of potatoes now being lifted.
