MISSION CONCLUDED.
VISIT OF REV. L. B. FLETCHER. The mission conducted in Ashburton by the Empire evangelist, the Rev. Lionel B. Fletcher, concluded last night, when St. Andrew’s Hall was again filled to capacity. The lesson was read by Mr L, T, Greenfield, and the Rev. W. T. Blight led in prayer. The Rev. J. S. Murray thanked Mr Fletcher, and Mr and Mrs A. G. Williams who accompanied him, stating that the ministers were behind Mr Fletcher in his work. M\ C. E. Hopwood led the singing, supported by a choir of 80 voices. Mrs A. E. Harvey was the pianist. Mr Fletcher’s theme was the “passing over” of the angel of death, when the children of Israel were freed from their bondage in Egypt. He said that all the “isms” of our times —Fascism, Communism, Socialism and the rest, were useless unless based on changes in human personality. No man could even live the sermon on the Mount unless his life had been transformed by the power of the living Christ. “All the time we are trying manmade remedies and neglecting what God has revealed to us as the only remedy,” said the speaker. “The result is nothing but disappointment and disillusionment ahead of the w r orld until man has enthroned Christ in the individual life and thus received Divine power to live the Divine life. That is the only brotherhood of man which can truly be a brotherhood.”
