WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.
THE HAMPSTEAD MEETING. There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Hampstead Women’s Institute, held in the Hampstead Memorial Hall, the president (Mrs Ford) presiding. There were two new members and three visitors. » A motion of sympathy in her illness was passed with Mrs Beech, one of the senior members. Mesdames Rose and Haack were appointed sick visitors. Arrangements were made for the birthday party, a vote of thanks being passed to Mrs Morton for her offer to again provide the birthday cake. Stallholders were appointed for the patriotic street stall‘which the institute is to conduct in July.
Letters were received from four members of the Armed Forces thanking members for parcels of chocolate and tobacco. An invitation to attend their birthday party on June 2S was received from the Wakanui Institute. The roll call for “Soap for soldiers” met with a good response. Mrs Ford read an interesting article on the pioneer days of Akaroa. A drawing competition was Avon by Mrs Bonnell, Mrs Turton being the winner of the cake competition. Afternoon tea Avas served by Mesdames Holland, OliA'er, Rogers and Rickerby.
Competitions resulted: —Bloom, Mrs TAA r amley 1, Mrs Dakers 2, Mrs Rose 3; truss, Mrs TAvamley 1, Mrs Childs 2, Mrs Boucher 3; jar of autumn leaves, Mrs Turton 1, Mrs Smith 2, Mrs Ford 3; jar of preserved rhubarb, Mrs Campbell 1. Mrs Twamley 2; tAvo beetroot, Mrs Boucher 1, Mrs Twamley 2, Mrs Parkes 3; baby’s bib, Mrs Dakers 1, Mrs Holland 2; one-egg fruit cake, Mrs TAvamley 1, Mrs Rose 2, Mrs Dakers 3.
