WOMEN’S INSTITUTES.

Wl LLOWBY-EIFFELTON There was a good attendance at the birthday party of the Willowby-Eiffel-ton Women’s Institute, at which the president (Mrs R. Pearce) presided.

The motto was “O wad some power the giftie gie us to see ourselves as ithers see us.”

An airgraph was received from Seageant Jack Deal and a letter of appreciation for parcels from Private Lance Vessey.

Mrs S. P. Taylor and Mrs H. Crossman were in charge of the social hour when Houses of Crossman and Taylor entertained the House of Lill, winners of a competition. Greetings were received from, Ashburton district Lynnford Division and Mid-Canterbury Provincial Executive. Mrs C. Noble donated the birthday cake. The roll call was a “Scotch joke.”

Mrs Pearce, Mrs D. Shaw and Miss Elaine Lill sang solos, Miss Pearce, Mrs Hollow and Mrs S. 11. Lill being accompanists.

Miss Lill was appointed judge of competitions for 1944 and was presented with a shoulder spray in recognition of having won most points in shows throughout the year.

Competitions resulted: Large bloom, Mrs Shaw 1, Mrs R. Knox and Miss 11. Lill (equal) 2, Mrs Brash 3. Small bloom, Mrs C. Noble 1, Mrs 11. Oakley 2, Mrs R. J. Chapman 3. Mixed flowers and foliage, Miss H. Lill 1, Mrs R. J. Chapman 2, Mrs W. J. A. Hollow 3. Soldiers’ ginger biscuits, Mrs Deal 1, Miss H. Lill 2, Mrs Hollow 3. THE WAKANUI MEETING. A report by delegates to the annual meeting of the Mid-Canterbury Federation was received by ihe Wakanui Women’s Institute at its monthly meeting. A social half-hour followed, when members of Roosevelt House entei’tained members of Churchill House, the winners of the yearly competitions.

The following competitions were held: —Large bloom, Mrs Butterick 1. Mrs Watson and Miss Neill (equal) 2, Mrs G. Lead ley 8; small bloom, Mrs D. Wilson 1, Mrs Neill 2, Mrs Butterick 3; bowl of flowers, Mrs Butterick J, Mrs Dick 2, Mrs J. Moore and Mrs Watson (equal) 8; carrots, Mrs J. Moore and Mrs G. Leadley (equal) 1, Mrs Kirkland and Mrs Dick (.equal) 2, Mrs C. Brand 3.
