SHOT AT BY ANOTHER BOY. AN INCIDENT AT OAMARU. RIFLE AND SHOTGUN USED.

(P.A.) OAMARU, This Day. Four Oamaru boys had an alarming experience late yesterday afternoon when they were shot at by another lad with .22 ealibi’e rifle and later with a double-barrelled shot gun. * As a result of the shooting one of the boys, Ernest Little, aged 16, is in the public hospital. He received a charge of shot in the head, thigh, chest and a leg and an operation was later performed. The hospital authorities reported to-day that Little was progressing favourably. The scene of the shooting was the old mill road, near the water wheel. The four boys w-ere inspecting the mill wheel when they were fired upon by a boy 12 years of age with a .22 rifle. Following this the boys, who were somewhat alarmed, hurriedly returned to the road and three of them climbed a rise beside the face of the Borough Council’s quarry. The fourth, Little, who was keeping observation dn the person using the weapon, while standing on the edge of the quarry face received a charge of shot. Although severely wounded, Little was able to make his way down to! the roadway and was conveyed by a passing motorist first to Dr. R. S; J. Fitzgerald’s surgery and then to the public hospital. The police are making inquiries.
