HEROIC RESCUE

SEAMEN IN WRECKED SHIP. FOUR SOLDIERS DROWNED. DRAMA IN NEW SOUTH WALES. (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright.) (Rec. 12.15 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. Thirty Australian soldiers saved 62 members of the crew of a 9000-ton Allied ship' which ran aground in heavy seas on the coast of New South Wales. -Four of the Australians wei'e drowned when washed off the rocks.

The rescue was made in May, but news has just been released. The ship, driven by a storm, crashed on to the rocks, waves 30 feet high tearing away nearly all her lifeboats and battering to pieces the superstructure. Two Australian Army officers risked their lives by swimming out to a lifebuoy thrown from the ship with a line attached and towing it ashore. The Australians, buffeted by waves, then -stood on the slippery rocks, hold ing the rope taut. Members of the crew could then slide along it in a bosun’s elixir. As the last rescue of the day was being attempted a great wave swept, seven soldiers out to sea. Four were drowned! The ship later broke up and became a total loss.
