NEW YORK, November 13,

Seven Australian brides of United States servicemen were rescued at night when the Swedish ship on which they were travelling caught fire in the Pacific. A well-known Sydney businessman, Mr W. J. Stack, discovered the fire, aroused passengers, and fought the fire for five hours. The crew was unable to reach the ship’s ehgineer, who was trapped in his cabin and burned to death. Twenty-six passengers, mostly Australians, and the crew lost everything. The ship, which was gutted but not totally destroyed, is well known in the Australian trade.

All of the Women and children and some of the men aboard climbed into the lifeboats after the fire was discovered, but a rope slipped, plunging one boat into the water endways. Everybody in it was hurled into the sea. The crew launched an emergency life raft. Men in another lifeboat helped the women and children, several of whom were injured, on to the life raft.

Everyone later returned to the ship after the flames had been extinguished. '
