LICENSEE AND BARMAN FINED. (P.A.) DUNEDIN, October IC. “It would be absurd to suggest that defendant had taken any reasonable steps to see that the provisions of the Licensing Act and the Licensing Regulations were complied with, and the fact that two barmen saw fit to supply boys under 21 is a serious reflection on the conduct of the hotel,” said Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M., when Leslie Charles Atyeo, licensee of the Empire Hotel, pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court tb charges of supplying liquor to persons under 21 years. The barmen, Joseph Henry Isherwood and James Pollock, each pleaded guilty to charges of supplying liquor to persons under 21, and Pollock to a further charge of supplying liquor after hours.
Senior-Sergeant D. W. Black said that on September 18 a youth, aged'' 18, went to the public bar of the hotel, where lie bought and consumed a glass of beer which was served by Ishenvood. The same evening he returned to the hotel and had more drink, being joined by two other lads of 17 and 16, the last-mentioned being a high school boy who also hail a drink. The first youth then asked the licensee for four bottles of beer, and these were supplied. The three boys left the hotel at 8.20 p.m. and roamed .round the streets, drinking the beer. Then the first youth assaulted a man and stole £2 from him. He had been dealt with by the Court.
Atyeo was fined £3O on the first charge and £2 on the second charge, and costs. Pollock was fined £ls for supplying liquor after Hours and £2 on the other charge. Isherwood was fined £5. All the- defendants were ordered to pay costs.
