NATIONAL SAVINGS.
WiRONG IMPRESSION PREVAILS. NO RESERVE IN HAND. An erroneous impression regarding National Savings has gained ground in Ashburton. Many people think that *the committee has a substantial reserve in hand, and that when the position is desperate, as it was last week, it invests a portion of the reserve to save the town’s record. ,
This was stated to-day by the chairman of the National Savings Committee (Mr A, A. McDonald) to be incorrect. He explained that Ashburton’s record would have gone by the board last week had it not been for the work of one member of the committee, who made a special trip to phristchurch to obtain a large investment from a late resident of Ashburon who had a' sum of money lying idle here.
As there was only the small carryover of £53 from last week, and there would be no .Christchurch resident to fall back bn this week, Mr McDonald appealed to residents to invest early.
