ANNUAL MEETING.

EAST ASHBURTON SWIMMING CLUB. There was a good attendance at the annual meeting of the East, Ashburton Swimming Club last evening, the president (Mr G. Bowman) presiding. The report stated that in spite of the fact that the weather was not very good the club had experienced its best year for some time. Season tickets showed a, considerable increase, while gate takings and takings at carnivals were more than doubled. The season began with a credit balance of £53, and ended with a credit of £B6, of which £SO was invested in National Savings. The responsibility of maintaining swimming in Ashburton fell chiefly on the East Ashburton Club, continued the report, and members were to be congratulated on their sportsmanship in turning out on numerous occasions. Eight carnivals were held, including the Centre Championships, the Centre patriotic carnival, and the Allenton annual carnival, as well as five club carnivals.

Competitions for club‘trophies were keenly contested, the following being the successful competitors: Learners' medal, girls, Miss B. Childs; boys, G. McCormick. Hardy Shield, girls, Miss D. Keenan. Hunt Shield, boys, A. Meade; Bowman Shield (juniors), girls, Miss H. Burnaby; boys, L. Whearty; Glossop McCrea Cup, Miss C. Grice and Miss J. Cox; Barnett Cup, Miss E. Harrison; Bowman Cup, D. Cooke; R. S. White Cup, J. Leatham; Nicoll Cup, J. Leatham; Lloyd Tait Memorial Cup, J. Leatham; Curtis Cup, J. Turner; Noel Thomson Memorial Cup, J. Turner; Newton Cup, East Ash. No. 1 (J. Smallbone, O. Rudd, J. Hawkes, J. Horsburgh). The club team competed with sue cess at the Mid-Canterbury Championships, members being Miss E. Harrison, N. McCrea and H. Thomson. The relay team also won the New South Wales Pennant, the team consisting of N. McCrea, G. Eyles, T. White and G. Strange. The committee recorded with regret the death of a former member, Mr G. Eyles. Messrs J. Hunt and E. Parkin were elected life members. The election of officers resulted: Patrons, Mr J. Hunt, Serfr., and Mr W. S. Kerr; president, Mr G. Bowman; vice-presidents, Mrs H. Cooke, Sparrow, R. Neilson, T. White, I. Eyles, Mrs H. Cooke, Misses E. Harrison and C. Grice; delegates to Centre, Messrs O. A. Spicer, S. Thompson and A. Stills.
