FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the ’’Guardian,” Oct. 12,1893) Women’s Franchise.—On Wednesday evening Mr Waby addressed the Ashburton Liberal Association on the extended franchise to women and the direct veto. A number of ladies were present. Several questions -were put, which Mr Waby answered. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Oct. 12, 1918) Problem of Coal—Although there is no increase in the supply of coal local merchants are expressing less difficulty now than was the case during the latter part of the winter in fulfilling requirements. The change is due principally to the advent of warmer weather, and a consequent decrease in consumption, also to the improvement in the supply of firewood which is now more easily obtainable.
