ALLEGED ATTEMPTED MURDER. REPORTED FIRING OF SHOTS. (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Charged with having attempted to murder his wife, Kathleen Ann Ryan, on October 2, Arthur William Ryan, a machinist, aged 37, appeared before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court this morning. Ryan was also charged with having carried a firearm without lawful purpose. Mrs Ryan, in evidence, said she had not been living with her husband since November last. On the night of October 2 Ryan went to the house where she was living with her mother. She heard a. noise outside and taking a poker went outside. She saw her husband fumbling at the gate and grabbed hold of him while he was trying to get on liis bicycle. “I hit him on the back of the head with the poker,” said Avitness. It was later found that a pane of glass in a scullery window had been broken, while on the following day she was present when a bullet Avas recovered from a weather board. Detective-Sergeant A. A. Heron gave evidence as to the arrest of Ryan, a firearm had been found in Ryan’s overcoat pocket. The detective said he told Ryan that his Avife had made certain allegations to the effect that he had fired a shot at her and attempted to murder her. Ryan said: “I went, there Avitli that intention, I am sorry I did not do it. She has driven me mad.” Ryan pleaded not guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial.
