LOWEST TWO-MONTHLY AVERAGE. i LONDON", October 9. “In spite of increased U-boat activity at the end of last month, the average merchant ship losses from all causes in September and August, together are the best on record since the outbreak of the Avar,” says a joint statement issued under the authority of Mi- Churchill and Mr Roosevelt. “Until the third week of September no Allied merchantman Avas lost by U-boat attack. “In September 19, U-boats ended a four-months lull in the North Atlantic Avhen a pack of at least 15 submarines concentrated on a west-bound convoy. The combat lasted 41 days. The loss of three escort vessels has already been announced. A small number of merchantmen Avere sunk, but as a result of vigorous counter-attacks by surface air escorts a- large numbei of U-boats Avere sunk or damaged. The resumption of pack tactics is evidence of the enemy’s intention not to spai e efforts to turn the tide of the U-boat Avar.”
