ENEMY PLANES SHOT DOWN. JAPANESE POSITIONS BOMBED. (Rev. 11.55 a.m.) LONDON, July 28. A United States Navy Department states: “In the Central Pacific, Liberators again attacked Japanese positions on Wake Island. Approximately 25 Zero fighters intercepted the Liberators, seven Zeros being destroyed, five probably destroyed, and. three damaged. Despite heavy anti-aircraft fire bombs were -placed on* the designated targets. All the United States planes returned safely. There were no casualties among United States personnel. “In the North Pacific on Monday a flight of Liberators, Lightnings and AVnrJiawks carried out 13 bombing attacks on Japanese installations at Kiska (Aleutians). As a result of these bombings fires were started, and explosions wore observed on the north and south heads of flu* runway, bivouac and submarine base sections of Gertrude Vve and Little Kiska. Individual targets in these areas wore also strafed.. One of the United States AYarliawks and Lightnings carried out six bombing attacks on Kiska, hits being made in the bivouac area. The weather precluded full observation of the results.”
