OBITUARY.

MRS J. C. N. GRIGG. After- having been in failing health for the last few years, Mrs Alice Montgomery Grigg, widow of Mr John Charles Nattle Grigg, formerly of Longbeach' Estate, died at her home in Park Lane, ‘Fendalton, on Saturday. Mrs Grigg’s father was Captain F. W. Hutton, F.R.S., an Englishman, who came to New Zealand in 1860 and was appointed .professor of biology at Canterbury University College in 1880, retiring from this post to become curator of the Canterbury Museum. Having lived at Longbeach after her marriage in 1891, Mrs Grigg after the death of her husband made her homo in Christchurch, being admired and loved at both places for her charm of manner, her unfailing kindness, her understanding and ready sympathy. Major A. N. Grigg, who died on active service in the Middle East, was a son of Mrs Grigg. Her two other sons are Mr J. H. Grigg, of Longbeach, and Mr G. Grigg, of Hororata, while Mrs J. K. Hardy, her daughter, lives in Fendalton Mrs Maitland Rich and Mrs Lancelot Lane are sisters.

MR CHARLES JAMES NORTON. A former postmaster of Ashburton, Mr Charles James Norton died yesterday, in his 86th year. Mr Norton took up his' position as postmaster here after being an inspector of post offices in the North Island. Ho held the position for about three years and then retired and for nearly 30 years has lived quietly at his home in Belt Hoad. A keen sportsman, Mr Norton was particularly interested in fishing and golf and was well known for his kindly interest in beginners at those sports, having taught many who are to-day reaping the benefit of his tuition. He was formerly a member of tho Ashburton Tennis and Croquet Clubs. Mr Norton was also for a period a churchwarden at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church. He is survived by his wife. * MR FREDERIC T. PERKINS. Well-known as an experienced and efficient draughtsman, clerk of works and supervisor of buildings operations, Mr Frederic Truman Perkins died in Christchurch recently at the age of 85. One of his sons (Mr Charles Perkins), .resides at Fairfield. Other members of his family reside at Christchurch, Riverton and Wellington. Mr Perkins’ first position after his arrival in New Zealand in the sailing ship “Calypso’’ in 1879 was that of junior draughtsman with the Waimate County Council and with the late Mr Robert Baxter ho surveyed a large portion of that county. Going later to Christchurch he supervised the building of freezing works for various companys .at Belfast, Islington, Smithfiekl and Picton, and also the construction of the Australian Chilling and Freezing Company’s works at Aberdeen, New South Wales. Mr Perkins also supervised the erection of St. Luke’s Church in Christchurch, and the additions in stone to Christ’s College.
