THRESHING HANDS

POSITION IN THE COUNTY. MILL-OWNERS CIRCULARISED. ZONING SCHEME ABANDONED. The National Service Department at Ashburton is taking up the question of the manning of threshing mills and ; header harvesters for the coming season and, to this end, owners of threshing mills have been' circularised with a view to finding out their probable labour requirements. The District Agent of the, National Service Department (Mr J. B. Pearson) said that, in order to make the best possible use ‘of the limited amount of labour likely to be available this season, the question of zoning was investigated but this hrfd fallen through. The position regarding the manning of certain mills last year was definitely acute and in some cases a few mills had to be manned the equivalent of two or three times. If the demands for labour were too heavy the District Manpower Officer would necessarily, have to be given to those mills which are operating the most efficiently. Although the owners of contract headers had not been circularised, these conditions applied equally to them. Forms of application for labour are available at the National Service Office.
