LOOKING BACK.

FIFTY YEARS SYNE, (From the “Guardian,” Nov. 27, 1892). Cloud Phenomena—The thunderstorm in the Ashburton Forks district on Friday produced very remarkable cloud effects in that locality. Soon after the thunder commenced, and before rain or hail fell, a dense, dark body collected over the mountains and hung there for a considerable time, flashes of lightning discharging therefrom at intervals. Suddenly two currents of wind-appear-ed to meet, and, forming a whirlwind, drew some of the unper clouds down and forhied an immense column, pointed and perfectly still at the bottom, which reached down to the bush about Pudding Hill. T'ho upper portion, however, had a very rapid rotary motion, apparently bringing down fresh clouds into the column, which was visible for over ten minutes, gradually and then suddenly disappearing.

TWENTY-FIVE'YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Nov. 27, 1917). Fishing—Several local anglers visited the mouth of the Ashburton River yesterday, and report fair catches of small fish. An easterly wind was blowing during the evening, which interfered with the fishing. Eire Brigade—Members of the Ashburton Volunteer Eire Brigade received a call at 11.301 last evening to extinguish a firo in a hedge at the rear of Mr W. Pick ford’s ’residence in Tancred Street, but the outbreak was suppressed before the Brigade reached the scene. Food Economy in England—Sir Arthur Yapp is appealing for specially drastic food economy in the first week of the New Year. Under the heading: “S.O.S. Week” (“Save Or Starve”), he says, “We must show our American friends who. by self-denial, are sending us food, that we are receiving it in the same spirit.”
