AMERICAN FIGHTERS.

MORE THAN MATCH FOR ENEMY. WASHINGTON, October 5. American combat planes are more than a. match for the opposing enemv planes, says the report of the Military Affairs Sub-Committee of the United States House of Representatives, after a fortnight’s study of charges that American fighters are inferior to some German and Japanese planes.

Commenting that in aerial combat it is the box score that counts, the report revealed that American planes were consistently shooting down the enemy in the ratio of two to one or three to one. Furthermore, during the period from- August 14 to September 14, the ratio was seven to one. The report added that the Zero was a good fiver, hut a! poor fighter. It praised the performance of the American P4O and P 39, and. of the Flying Fortresses. The report gave a warning that the ratio of American losses must increase as the United States goes further mi the offensive.

The committee investigated the accident rate in. the air forces, and the report described it as excellent, although publicity on all accidents had led the public to believe otherwise.
