HEAVIER SACRIFICES.
CONFIDENCE IN THE BRITISH. (Rec. 1.10 a.m.) SYDNEY, July 7. Heavier sacrifices would fie necessary in the coming months, but if the Empire remained resolute and steady the Axis could fie defeated, declared the British High Commissioner (Sir Ronald Cross), addressing the Royal Empire Society. “British people have never been professional soldiers and this may have something to do with the reverses the Empire is now suffering.” Sir Ronald emphasised that if Britain could hold on to her present world position for the remainder of this year and, the early part of next year, America "would have so developed her resources that it would be time to think of an offensive to defeat the enemy. The secret of the United Kingdom’s power lay in the fact that she had been able, through good organisation, to obtain a greater effort per head of the population than any other country engaged in the present struggle.
