LOOKING BACK.
FIFTY YEARS' SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” March 5, 1892) Annual Carnival. —The second annual meeting of the Ashburton Amateur Swimming Club was held in the Domain Bath yesterday, and was attended by over 2000 people —as dense a. crowd of people as has ever attended any gathering in the (Domain.' A half-holi-day had been declared, and the business places of the town were closed to a door, so that everyone had the opportunity of attending—and did. The weather could not have been better fertile swimmers. The sun shone out of a sky of brass, and the heat was intense. This was more perhaps to the comfort of the swimmers, as the water was quite tepid, and chills impossible; hut the strong sun, made a sunshade a very necessary part of a lady’s equipment. The arrangements of the committee were excellent, and every official did his work so well that the lengthy programme of four and twenty items was got through well within time. Mr Muller was starter. On the ground a large dressing tent had been erected, which was intended for use by the Ashburton competitors, the three permanent dressing rooms having been set aside for the use of the visitors. A covered stall had been erected in which Mrs Ranger dispersed tea, and coffee and cakes to the competitors and the public, and she and her husband and daughters were perhaps as hard-worked people as any people on the ground. The club is indebted to Mr Patching for the use of flags, to Messrs Ross and Rested for timber, and to Mr P. Williams for much labour in the erection, of buildings. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the. “Guardian,” March 5, 1917) Inmates of Tuarangi Home. —The North Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board has decided to obtain a. medical report on the inmates of the Tuarangi Old Men’s Home:, with a. view to ascertain whether they are able to do some light work, enabling them to fill positions in the country whore there is a shortage of labour. It was reported that men had been, committed to the institution,‘suffering from the various complaints from which they are now recovered. Some would probably be only too pleased to be given aq opportunity to do work.
