ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY. “YOUNGER MAN NEEDED.” <lJnited Press Association—Copyright.! LONDON, Jan. 21. Announcing his intention to resign to the Convocation of Canterbury, held in London, Dr. Lang said that his mam reason was that great tasks of reconstruction awaited the Church, as well as the State, after the war. He wished to hand over his office to someone younger in years and more vigorous in spirit. Dr. Lang, who is 77 years of age, entered the Church in 1c590. His abilities were recognised early by Queen Victoria, who appointed him her Honorary chaplain. He was Bishop of Stepney from 1001 to 1008. In 1008, atthe age of 45, lie was made Archbishop of York. He has been Archbishop of Canterbury since 1028.
THE RESIGNATION ACCEPTED. APPROVAL BY HIS MAJESTY. (Rec. 11.15 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 21. The King received*with great regret the intimation from Archbishop Lang that he was desirous of .resigning his high office. His Majesty, cn the recommendation of Mr Churchill, has by Royal "Warrant appointed a commission consisting of the Archbishop of York, the Bishop of London, the Bishop cf Durham, and the Bishop of Winchester for the purpose of receiving the resignation. The commission reported its acceptance of Dr. Lang’s resignation, to take effect on March 31, and this has been approved by his Majesty.—(British Official Wireless. The Archbishop made the announcement that he is retiring in the College Hall attached to Westminster Abbey. The Bishop ef London expressed the Bishops’ regret at the retirement, “which they heard with something akin to dismay.” The Dean of Norwich voiced the .regret of the clergy.
