ARMED MIGHT.

POSITION OF UNITED STATES. THE FLEET IN THE PACIFIC. (Rec. 10.50.) NEW YORK, Oct. 20. The United States has 33 divisions under arms, says the military correspondent of the “New York Times” (Mr Hanson Baldwin). Only 42 divisions were sent to France in the, last war. There is no cause for fear about America’s/ armed might. Our strength in the Atlantic has greatly increased. The Panama Canal has the largest garrison in history and the defences have been modernised. In the Pacific our position in many ways is immeasurably stronger than it was a year ago. Our naval strength in the Pacific is weaker because of the transfer of units to the Atlantic but auxiliary vessels have been greatly increased and the Pacific fleet is on a complete war footing., JAPANESE IN MANCHUKUO. MASSING OF LARGE FORCES. NAVAL UNITS IN THE SOUTH. (Rec. 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, Oct. 20. ' The Chinese military spokesman in Chungking estimates that Japan has massed the equivalent of 29 divisions in Manchukuo and that three additional divisions are en route. Simultaneously the Japanese are rushing more men and supplies into Indochina and concentrating naval forces in the Gulf of Siam, Camranh Bay and off Hainan. ;
