ENEMY DECEIVED.

SURRENDER TO WOODEN TANKS WORK OF DECEPTION OFFICERS. (Rec. 12,30) NEW YORK, Oct. 20. Seven thousand Italians surrendered to eight British wooden cannon, 2o wooden tanks and a handful of imperial troops in the campaign in North Africa last winter reports the Cairo correspondent of the Associated Press. These cannon and tanks and a false aerodrome and railway were the work of deception officers who played numerous tricks against the Italians in Libya and Abyssinia. Deception was widely practised in the Western Desert. The work of the officers engaged on this duty included entering bars, pretending drunkenness, and “spilling secrets.” The deception officers may move forward with wooden tanks, propelled by soldiers walking inside them, or they may be the real thing, made to resemble something else. You never know, says the correspondent.
