EARLY SHEARING.

AN APPEAL TO FARMERS. SPREADING OF THE LABOUR. Because of the shortage of labour available for the shearing season, Ashburton County farmers are being urged to shear their dry sheep as soon as possible, so that the labour offering may be spread over a longer period and to the best advantage. An appeal on these lines was made to-day by the State Placement Officer (Mr J. B. Pearson) in conversation with a “Guardian” reporter. The position in regard to shearing in this district this season would be even more difficult than in the previous two seasons, and because of the shortage of men for the shearing sheds farmers would be well advised to start the sheaving of their dry sheep early.

In an endeavour to ascertain the labour available for this work, Mr Pearson said, he had circularised 80 persons in the County who were known to be shearers. He had had 54 replies, and of these 24 had stated that they were fully booked up or were not available for shearing. On these figures it seemed there were were still about 30 men available for work, though it was known that a few had gone to North Canterbury to catch the early shearing. „
