Well-known Author—Mr Rudyartt Kipling, the well-known author, arrived at Wellington irom London oh Saturday by the Doric, and is booked tor Auckland. Carson lias brought out an excellent baking-powder, which is being sold under the brand “Tuckahoe.,” ami gives satisfaction in making bread, scones, and all kinds of cakes. “Tuckahoe, " Mr Carson explains, was a very nutritious kind of bread matte by tho Indians of -North America in days gone by, and their physical deterioration may lie traced partly to their abandonment of tins article of diet. Ashburton Show—The privileges in connection with the Ashburton Show were sold by auction by Mr J. G. Rested at the Arcade to-day, as follows: Publican’s booth, No. l, £2O, -Mr J. Henry ; publican's booth, No. 2, £'26, Miss Butler; confectioner’s booth. No. I, £l4, Mr W. C. Davis; confectioner’s booth, No. 2, £7 10s, Mr W. C. War Loan Certificates —Applications for war loan certificates are still copiing in steadily at the Ashburton Post Office. Up to 'October 15, £12,358 worth had been issued. Imported Shorthorn—Mr John Grigg, of Longboacli, has imported by . the lonic a 15-months-old Shorthorn bull, named Roehcliffe Rod Earl, bred by Sir J. H. Madden. His sire was Tord Canning and his dam was Rosedale Lady. Lord Canning was bought tor 1000 guineas in 1915.
