PATRIOTIC FUNDS.
RAISING THROUGH TAXATION. LETTER TO MINISTERS’ ASSOCIATION. Replying to representations made by the Ashburton Ministers’ Association that patriotic funds should be raised by taxation, the Minister of Finance (the Hon. W. Nash) in a letter received by the Association yesterday stated that a considerable volume of spare-time voluntary effort was available for the raising of these funds under the present scheme. It was also Stated that the Government was desirous of satisfying all sections of the community, at the same time aiming to keep taxation at the lowest possible level. The president (the Rev. W. N. Flett) presided over the meeting, which was fully attended. The secretary (the Rev. A. D. Lowe) reported that he had received a request for a repetition of the type of youth rally held recently in the Baptist Church. The question was left to the Rev. J. S. Murray to contact the Bible Class leaders who convened the last meeting. There was considerable discussion on the question of holding simultaneous missions. The proposal *was favourably received but no immediate action was decided on. It was agreed that the question should be kept in mind for 1942.
