LOOKING BACK.

FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Aug. 7, 1891). .Curacy of Longbcaeh—The Rev. T. Farley, who assumes the curacy ot Longbeach parochial district, was ixr sonic time stationed at New Plymouth, laboured also in Auckland, and latter »y *■ at Taranaki, in each case endearing himself to his people. Gii July 25 last a meeting was hold of the Epiphany Church, congregation, of which Mr Farley was minister. The Taranaki “Budget,” ropor.ted the meeting, said: The meeting was a fairly representative oho of the congregation, a number of the lady members being among those present. The meeting was called to consider the resignation of the Rev. T. Farley, minister of the church. After a good amount of discussion it was proposed by Mr J. P. Fell, and sccpndcd by Mr J. W. Tibbs, “That the parishioners of the Epiphany Church sincerely .desire Mr Farley to request the bishop to allow him to withdraw his resignation.” On being put to the meeting the resolution was carried unanimously. We may mention that Mr Farley rode from Christehucrlri to Tinwald on Wednesday. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “(Guardian,” Aug. 7, 1916). Russian Achievements—Mr Stanley Washburn (special correspondent of the “Times”), reviewing the past two months’ offensive, says: “The Russians have approximately advanced 54 miles at various points. They have captured three generals, 7064 officers, 330,000 soldiers, 504 guns, and 1200 machineguns, representing losses, including dead, casualties, and missing, amounting to 750,000. I cannot sftvte the Russian losses, but they are of no military . significance; they could sustain double , the summer’s losses for five years without experiencing a shortage of men.” In the West—A communique states: We are co-operating with the_ British on our left. In an attack on Guillemont we advanced eastward of Hill 139 and northward of Hardccourt. Two German counter-attacks on Monacu Farm failed. We stopped successive strong German attacks at Floury and Thiaumont Work, our machine-guns causing great losses. The Germans penetrated Thiaumont Work, after a furious fight which continues.
