TEMPERANCE UNION.

THE ASHBURTON ACTIVITIES. SAILORS’ DAY OBSERVED. Mrs W. H. Robinson presided over a large attendance at the meeting of the Ashburton Women’s Christian Temperance Union yesterday. A motion of sympathy with Mrs Robinson in the lqss of her mother was carried, members standing. Sympathy in bereavement was also expressed to Mrs Church, Miss Chapman and Mrs E. Baker. Mrs Robinson thanked members for their sympathy, and spoke briefly of her late mother’s great zeal for the cause. * The corresponding secretary was directed to write to Mrs Peryman (editor of the “White Ribbon”) a letter of cheer on her recovery from a serious illness. . Replies to letters regarding the appointment of women police were received from the Hon. P. C. Webb and from the Hon. F. Jones regarding mobile canteens for ice-creams and soft drinks. A musical monologue was given by Miss L. Robinson assisted by Miss D. Rooke. A piano solo and two vocal solos were given by Master Noel Harwood. The Timval/t Union wrote inviting members to conduct the Timvald meeting- ou August 28. This was accepted. Mrs G. Tulloc-h gave an interesting temperance fact: “The Shetland Islands went ‘dry ’ some time ago during a local option campaign, and remain ‘ dry.’ In a population of 26,000 there is almost no unemployment, no crime, and five policemen are sufficient to look after 500 square miles.” Miss M. Jackson read a report of the work for sailors in the Dominion, sent by Mr Norrie/of Timaru. A collection of £1 was taken up. A large collection of scarves, writing material and other useful articles was brought by members to be forwarded to Timaru for distribution to sailors. The address was given by the Rev. J. S. Murray, who spoke of the great work of the sailors and the Navy, and congratulated the Union in setting aside a day in which to remember .the sailors. He took a text from Psalm 107, “They that go down to the sea in ships.” A number of petition forms were returned containing over 100 names, and it was stated that there are still a few more to come in.

Afternoon tea was served and the meeting closed with the Benediction.
