EAST SCHOOL.
ATTENTION TO PLAYGROUND. The Ashburton East School Committee met last evening when there were present Messrs W. S. Kerr (chairman) E. H. Childs, H. W. Hayward, H. Cook and G. Fowke. Mr Childs, on behalf of the visiting committee, reported that a seat in the grounds needed repairing and recommended that a load of shingle be spread over some depressions in the playgrounds. It was decided to apply for the pi’omised plans of an infants’ swimming pool in order that erection can be completed in time for the beginning of the season. The Headrmf&ter (Mr S. G. Macfarlane) reported that the attendances had been more than normally affected by sickness. Miss M. Hay (supernumerary assistant) had been withdrawn for relieving work under the Auckland Education Board. Dr. Druker had visited the school for the purpose of immunising children against diphtheria and would return on the 19th. Mr G. Webb (supervisor of physical instruction) had also paid a visit. At the seveh-a-side football and basketball tournament the school was runner up in several classes. The relay team succeeded in winning l back tlm. Empire Games Pennant. The grant for the library would be drawn on presently but the difficulty was to get the hooks needed.
Messrs Corbett and Cook were appointed as a, visiting committee for hext month and it was decided to organise a working bee on Saturday afternoon to place some soil on the grounds.
