A NEW POLICY.
FOR TREE CONSCIOUSNESS. J Technical school planting. The planting of 120 trees this morning as part of the Ashburton Technical High School’s Arbor Day observance marked the initiation of a new policy in the development of tree consciousness.. by tlie utilisation of spare land OWned by firms or private individuals. All area of land had been, made available in this instance by Messrs Crlim Brothers, situated in Middle Road. The boys of the school assembled there at 11.45 o’clock this morning and after listening to an address by the Principal (Mr W. Crawford) planted horse 'chestnuts, two varieties of English birch, hornbeams-, Spanish chestnuts, English beech, two varieties of native beech, ribbon wood and oak. The Principal pointed out the purpose and value of Arbor Day and referred to the penalties that could he imposed on .people who damaged trees on public reserves or on Crown land. He spoke of tlie importance of trees to Ashburton County in the conservation of moisture, the modification of temperatures, and the protection of stock •alia crops. A further SO trees will be planted by pupils of the school at the -recreation ground near Chalmers Avenue on Friday.
