ST. JAMES THEATRE. _ “MAISIE WAS A LADY;”

“Maisie,” the by now familial’ showgirl with the heart of gold,. perennially stranded and perennially wise-cracking her way to new adventures, appears in her brightest setting to date in the latest of the series, _ “Maisie "Was a Lady)” showing tq-night and Thursday at 8 p.m. with Ann Sothern again in the starring role and with Lew Ayres and Maureen O’Sullivan heading the supporting east. Though a society background may appear at first thought, somewhat incongruous for Maisie, it provided. Miss Sothern in this instance with her best story in the series, Well knit, believable and appealing. And the star herself was never better. Through her, Maisie has become an unforgettable screen character, destined to take her place as one of motion pictures’ most original creations.

COMMUNITY SING AT HINOS.

The final community sing in aid of distress in London was held in the Hinds Centennial Hall on Saturday evening. Mr Olliver, assisted by Mr H. Beil, led the singing. Gifts of sweets, cakes, preserves and produce were auctioned. Songs were sung by Mrs H. A. Barnett, a trio by school children, recitations by Miss Noeline Betts, short sketches were given by Mr Bell and Mr Olliver. The accompanists were Mrs Barnett, Miss McKeage and Mr Clarkson. The pianist was Mr Clarkson!

PHYSICAL TRAINING CLUBS.

Members of the Ashburton Keep Fit Club and the St. Andrew’s Physical Training Club gave an entertainment at Tuarangi Home last evening, when there was a large attendance of inmates and visitors. The programme, which was as follows, was very much enjoyed:—

Marching by members of both clubs, side horse, skipping, pyramids, balance drill (circle), folk dances (a) skating dance, (b) Cochin China; mat drill, Ten Pretty Girls, spring board, free exercises, dumbells, spring: ballet, long horse, folk dances (a) Gathering Peascods (b) Flirtation; circle drill, games.

The accompaniments were played by Miss,es I. Nicholas and N. McDonald. Other items were pianoforte play ing by Mr W. Massey (an inmate) and one by Mr C. Duckworth. Thanks were expressed to the performers by the Master of the (Home (Mr N. W. Corbett).
