LONDONERS PACK TRAINS. GOVERMENT'S APPEAL IGNORED. (Rec. 12.30 p.m.) LONDON. Aug. 3. Thousands avlio ignored the Government’s plea to stay put for the holiday packed the raihvay stations, iouglir for tickets and scrambled for trains. They were forced to trek sadly hack at nightfall because they had'nowhere to stay in the packed seaside tOAvns. Others got lots of fresh air hut little to eat as the Ministry of Food refused to senu extra, supplies'to holiday towns. Many were turned back from the south coast because it is a defence area. The polico kept double Avatch at stations and roads. Thousands spent the holiday on the Thames Riverside. The “Daily Express” in a leader, said: “Doughty London, which shoived the big cities of the Avorld floAv to take bombs, set the worst example,. Avith holiday trains ’leaving in seven sections. Coal Avas stoked into locomotives while the miners gave up their free time to dig more, and petrol bought at tlie cost of many lives was burnt on roads. Next time the Government wants the public to stay put on a holiday it must issue an order, not an appeal.”
