MEN’S HOCKEY.

WAKANUI BEATS SQUARE ROKEBY LOSES TO ASHBURTON. Very even .play was seen in the match between Wakanui and Baring Square when the competitions of the Ashburton Men’s Hockey Sub-Associ-ation were continued on Saturday. At half-time Baring Square were leading by two goals to nil, and seemed to have Wakanui beaten. In the second spell, Wakanui, by dint of strenuous efforts retrieved the position, drawing •level 15 minutes before the call of time. In the final stages Wakanui. were completely on top, and emerged' the 'winners by 4 goals to 2. i I. Loach (right wing) played a particularly good game for Wakanui, s&d although he did' not score, made several good openings for his team. mates. For Baring Square J. Penman played a sound game at right-half, and N. Hopkins played well in the forwards. Had it not been for the excellent goalkeeping of J. Thomas, Wakanui’s score would have been much higher. A Anderson (2), J. Bennett and T. Bennett scored for Wakanui, and M. Penman and N. Hopkins for Square. The umpires were Messrs 0. Moore and A. C. Vincent. Lack of finish in the circle robbed Rokeby of many scoring chances in a match with Ashburton in which they were defeated by 6 goals to 1,- The country goal-keeper Barclay had a day off, and should have been able to stop, several of the goals which were netted. For Ashburton H. A. Barnett shot four goals and 0. Moore and H. Thomson one each, while for Rokeby S. Letham scored the only goal. Messrs H. Fringe and K. G. Fowke were the umpires.
