WORK PROGRESSING.
THE MEMORIAL PLAYGROUND. FORMATION IN THE DOMAIN.* A good start has been made with tho formation of the Dr. Miller Memorial Playground on tho new site at the south-east corner of tho Oval ru the Ashburton Domain and it is estimated that most of the preliminary work will be completed within six weeks. This new work is no small task, for the lake lias to be filled with eartn and rubble to join the island to the mainland.
Already a part of the lake has been filled in with earth taken from ino island, which is being excavated and levelled off. Material tor the filling in of the lake will, however, 'come mainly from roads in the town. The old willows on the island are being removed and only a few of the best evergreen trees will be’ left for shade purposes. 'When the island has been joined to the mainland and the whole area levelled off it will be surfaced with a fine gravel. This surfacing has been adopted in the most up-to-date playing areas and should be superior to a lawn surface that would become cut up under constant use.
The whole playground is eventually to bo surrounded with a cyclone fence so that tho area will become a compact reserve with clearly-defined entrances. The amusement equipment, including swings, slides and other apparatus, will be of the most modern design and will bo erected with galvanised piping. At present, when the ground is in a state of transition, it presents anything but an attractive appearance, but when completed it should be a bright and popular spot that will form a fitting memorial to the late 'Mayor.
