PATRIOTIC AFFAIRS.

THE ZONE EXECUTIVE. REHABILITATION SUBCOMMITTEE. Although it had not hgd a meeting since October 4 of last year, the Patriotic Executive for the Ashburton County, Borough and Tinwald zone, which met in the County Council chamber yesterday afternoon, had only a small amount of business to transact. The Deputy-Mayor (Mr A. A. McDonald) presided, pending the arrival of the Mayor (Dr. J. Connor). The secretary (Mr R. C. Major) reported that since the last meeting a rehabilitation sub-committee had been appointed, comprising 12 members of the executive, four representatives of the returned soldiers, two representatives of the Red Cross Society, and two representatives of the War Relief Fund.

The case of one returned soldier of the present war had been brought to the notice of the local authorities for rehabilitation, it was reported. Particulars of the case ihad been forwarded to the Canterbury Patriotic Council, and as the man had now gone to’live in Christchurch the whole matter had been administered from there. Mi* G. Kelly suggested that a small sub-committee should be empowered to deal with cases of relief that did not* require the calling together of the whole committee.

Dr. J. Connor, Messrs S. P. Taylor, G. Kelly and R. C. Major were appointed the sub-committee. Dr. Connor said that a, booklet setting out* a standard scale of relief was to be issued shortly. Mr Kelly said that an attempt was being made to have Navy and Air Florce servicemen retain pay-books when discharged from service, as in the case of the Army, so that the books could be presented when relief was sought.
