THE TERRITORIAL SERVICE. DECISIONS OF THE COMMITTEE. The Sou Hi Cant erbury Man-Power Committee completed its sitting in Ashburton Into yesterday afternoon hearing appeals for the postponement of service in Territorial camps. Staff Depleted. On the ground of public interest, Drummond and Etheridge, garage proprietors, appealed in respect of Graham Norrish, mechanic’s apprentice, of G'ro.v Street, time being asked to ailow of another employee to> do his training before the reservist is required. It was stated that the firm had 15 inales and two females on. its staff at the start of the war. Four were in the armed forces, one was about to go into the Air Force, one was passed for overseas service, and two were called for Territorial service. Time waS allowed as asked for. Reservist Objects. W. B. Ashford, toymnkor, of Rnkain, appealed, in respect of William O’Connor, woodworking machinist and spray painter asking for three months’ postponement. Appellant wrote stating that the reservist had' told him that if the appeal was not withdrawn, lie would leave appellant’s employment. The reservist .also wrote in similar strain. The appeal whs withdrawn. Contractor's! case. Victor Alexander McGeorge, con-, tractor, Rakaia, wrote asking that his training should be. set down for September, October and November, the period that would least interfere with his business. The request was acceded to. Gained for Overseas. The appeal of Jack Alexander Vallanee, of.’.Winch more, on the ground of public interest and undue hardship, was adjourned sine die as the, reservist ilias .been called Tip in an overseas ballot. Case of HosieriT Mechanic. An appeal was made by Tekau Knitwear, Ltd. (Mr'L. A. Charles) in respect of George Aubrey Stephen Marliias Hansen, hosiery mechanic, oi Allenton, asking that his training should "he postponed till another employee returns from his camp service. The second employee had been called m a previous ballot, but had not yet gone into camp. It was stated that the reservist was a very useful employe and it was essential to have a skilled mechanic to attend to the machinery. The reservist was an exceptional man. There were 80 emplovees and night shifts were being worked, the factory working 24 hours a day. Time allowed as asked tor. A Draper’s Appeal. John Wauchop Strachan, draper, ox Ashburton, appealed for time, the hearing on May 2 being adjourned to June 15 to see what arrangements the-reser-vist could make to get a man to replace him. Appellant had since been called in an overseas ballot and medically graded 2. He stated that he had been notified he would not be required for camp in July-September. His assistant had been called np, but would not go to camp as he was just 20 years of age. The appeal was dismissed, the appellant to go -into camp in September. Skilled Store-hand. The Public Trustee, in the Estate ol H. R. C. McElrea, wool and skin buyers, appealed for Charles William Gray, a store-hand, on the ground of public interest. It was said that Gray was a skilled hand and to replace him a man would have to be trained. It was pointed out that Gray was willing to go into camp and actually did not desire the appeal to go forward. A postponement of service fob six months to cover the busy period, was asked by the manager of the firm (Mr J. S. Weeks). The appeal was dismissed, the reservist not to be called np before January 6. Sale Employee on Farm. An appeal on the ground of public interest was made by the Public. Trustee in the estate of .1. A. McDonald on behalf of Eugene McDonald, a farmhand. It was stated that the sole employee on a farm of 674 acres. Mr A. 6. Robinson (District Manager of the Public Trust) said that the case was different from the usual in that the mother and father of the reservist had been killed in a railway accident about five months ago. McDonald had a brother overseas and another was aged 15. He asked if the case could he adjourned sine die. The appeal was adjourned sine die.
