DAMAGE BY BOMBS
AMERICAN WARSHIP IN CHINA. i MISSH-E PROPPED BY JAPANESE PROPERTY ALSO SUFFERS. (United Press Association— -Copyright.) (Rec, 1.55 p.m.) LONDON, July 30. “The Japanese dropped bombs directly over the United States gunboat Tutuila, anchored in the so-called safety zone at Chungking. There were no casualties but one bomb damaged the stern of the Tutuila, and sank a motor-boat. Another bomb fell between the gunboat and the Embassy. A third damaged the residence of a member of the Embassy staff. After conferring with the Japanese Ambassador (Admiral Nomura) at Washington the Under-Secre-tary of State (Mr Sumner Welles) announced that the United States had made representations to Japan over the bombing. He said that both the gunboat and the property were across the Yangtze River from Chungkirfg proper, thus indicating that the mistake was unjustifiable.
