THE COMPETITIONS.
ENTRIES REACH TOTAL OF 1220. CONSIDERED SATISFACTORY. Entries for the Ashburton Competitions Society’s festival which closed on Satxii’day have reached a total of 1220, which, while a lesser number than last year, is considered highly satisfactory in view of the adverse effect that me war has had on men’s classes. The secretary of the Society (Mr J. W. P. Dwyer) said this afternoon that the men’s vocal and instrumental classes had been sadly depleted as a consequence of- the military responsible' ities of men. All dancing sections were well patroixised, said Mi* Dwyer, and such was also the case ill the school sections. Satisfactory entries had also been received in the juvenile classes of the elocution section. There was every prospect of the forthcoming festival being a successful one. Competitors will be drawn from such long distances as Auckland and Invercargill.
