RAIDERS REPULSED
ATTEMPTS TO ATTACK SHIPPING RECENT BOMBING IN SICILY. MORE SUCCESS THAN REPORTED (Rec. 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, July 30. A Royal Air Force Middle East communique says: f ‘Royal Air Force figters drove off a strong formation of Junkers 87’s escorted by M.E. 109’s, which attacked our shipping off Cyrenaica yeserday. Four enemy bombers and two fighters were shot down. “Our heavy bombers again raided Benghazi on Monday night and about 10 tons of bombs were dropped on the quays and shipping and a number of fires were started.. A reconnaissance aver enemy aerodromes in Sicily showed that the raid reported in the communique yesterday was even more successful than was at first indicated. At Catania six fighters were seen to.have been destroyed, which is two more than the number previously claimed. There and at Dorizzio the number of badly-damaged aircraft exceeds that originally reported. “Two of our aircraft are missing from these operations’—British Official Wireless.
