ACTION COMING.

CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS (PA,) WELLINGTON, July 30. A hint that the position in regard to alternative service for conscientious objectors was likely to be met satisfactorily by action to be taken by the Government in the near future was given by the Hon. W. Perry, M.L.C., in addressing a gathering at Masterton . as Dominion president of the Returned Soldiers” Association. “The burning questipn of alternative service for military objectors at soldiers’ rates of pay should,” lie said, “be settled by regulations which the 'Government intends passing within the next few weeks.’ He pointed out that the R.S.A. had told .the Government that the sooner the matter- was settled the better, as it would allay the prevailing feeling of discontent throughout the Dominion. The meeting of Wairarapa ex-ser-vicemen adopted a resolution in support of the action of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board in dismissing a teacher who appealed against overseas service as a conscientious objector. The position in regard to aliens also came under notice at the meeting. In reply to an interjection “Lock them all up,” Mr Perry said that there were certain reasons why all enemy aliens could not be locked up. He paid a tribute to the splendid work being done by the Enemy Aliens Tribunal.
