SOLDIER HONOURED.
FUNCTION AT WAKANUI. There was a crowded attendance at the Wakanui Hall when Airs FJ. AI. Begg gave a social evening in honour of her son, Private Henry Begg. The proceedings opened with the National Anthem, and Airs Begg extended a welcome to the guefcts. Community singing was led by Air C. Brand, Mrs H. .1. Chapman being the accompaniste. Items were given as follow: —Violin solo, Aliss L. Amos; songs, Airs G. Alooro (accompanied by Mrs L. Aloore) and Air O. Brand; instrumental items, the Sparrow Brothers; mouth-organ solo, Air Walter Johnson ; recitations Air J. W. Butterick and Private H. Begg. The children were marched around tho ball and Private Begg presented them with toffee apples.
On behalf of the Patriotic Committee, Air F. Frampton presented Private Begg with a gold wristlet watch, and a presentation was made by Air j. W. Butterick on behalf of the 1.0.G.T. Lodge. Other presentations were made by Air C. Crawford on behalf of the Wakanui Rifle Club, Airs F. Butterick, on behalf of the Red Cross Society (a parcel of comforts). After supper dancing was indulged in to music by Airs H. Gordon, extras being played by Mrs A. Campbell.
