SUSTAINED ATTACK.
BOMBING OF CRETE HOSPITAL.
TOLL ON ENEMY AIRCRAFT (Roc. -11.30 a.m.) LONDON, May 20. A Royal Air Force Middlo East communique states: “Enemy aircraft carried out a sustained attack throughout yesterday on aerodromes in Crete. The hospital at Canea was bombed anu machine-gunned, some casualties being caused among the hospital staff.” Later reports disclose that on Friday much greater damage was done to enemy aircraft over Creto than was at first reported. Fivo aircraft were destroyed in addition to those already claimed.—British Official Wireless.
Crete, now the seat of the Greek Government, is garrisoned by Greek and Imperial troops under the command of Major-General B. C. Freyberg, Y.C. The New Zealand forces in Crete are commanded by Brigadier B. Puttick. . The strength of the garrison in Crote is not exactly known, but it was reported early this month that two full divisions of the Greek Army had landed there.
