ENEMY’S RUSE

N.Z. BATTLE-DRESS WORN,

THE SITUATION NOW IN HAND.

GERMANS FAIL IN OBJECTIVE. (Rec. 12.45 p.m.) LONDON, May 20. Mr Churchill stated in the House of Commons that 1500 enemy troops wearing New Zealand battle dress landed by means of gliders, parachutes and troop-carriers. A fairly strong enemy party south of the Canea-Malemi road has not yet been mopped up, but other parties were believed io have been accounted for. The situation was in hand at noon to-day. The enemy landings -were preceded by a good deal of intense bombing. Apparently the capture of the Malemi aerodrome was the enemy’s objective, but this has so far failed. A military hospital between Canea and Malemi, which the enemy captured, has now been recaptured. Cheers greeted Mr Churchill’s statement regarding the troops under General Freyberg, as reported in another message.
