THE WARNING SIGNAL.

IN EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY RINGING OF ST. STEPHEN’S BELLS. The ringing of the bells of St. Stephen’s Anglican Church will be the first indication to residents of the Borough of Ashburton that a state of emergency has arisen. The bolls at the Ashburton Fire Brigade Station and at the old Allenton Station will then take up the warning. A suggestion to this effect by the Mayor (Dr. ,T Connor) was adopted at a meeting of the central executive of the Ashburton Emergency Precautions Scheme last evening.

Mr H. G. Kemp (controller of Public Works and Utilities) said tlie Power Board might have one or two sirens that could be utilised. The Mayor said that the Rovl C. L. Mountfort (Vicar of St. Stephen’s) had agreed to sound the warning on the church bells, and should *Mr Mountfort not be available lie himself would see that the hells were rung. The Mayor pointed out that all the bells of St. Stephen’s would be rung at once to give, the most effective volume, and not in the manner in which they were rung ‘on Sundays. \

It was stated that the fire station attendant would bo in charge of the boll there. It was suggested that Mr •T Southward (headmaster of the Allenton School) should give the warning at Allenton as he lived close to the boll.
