MANUAL TRAINING.
567 PUPILS FROM 3t SCHOOLS. COUR.SE AT ASHBURTON CENTRE. There are no fewer than 567 school children, all but 13 of them from primary schools in Ashburton and the surrounding districts, taking manual training at the Ashburton Technical High School. The schools represented total 31. 'Che children come from all parts of the County, with Rokaia the most northerly centre, Springburn in the west and Hinds to the south. Of the total, 302 are boys and 265 are girls. They come on foot, on bicycles, in cars, by bus and by train. The girls are given a course in cookery and the boys undertake elementary woodwork. Those from the town schools have two lic-urs every week and those from the country have four hours every second week. From Standard VI in all schools there are 117 boys and 143 girls, while from Standard V there are 172 boys and 122 girls. The balance of the boys is made up of 13 pupils from the High School.
